Basic information about the use of cookies

We use cookies on our website. Cookies are small files that browsers such as Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer download to your computer as you browse the web. In line with the recommendations of the Information Commissioner, we have placed a notice on our website about the use of cookies.

What are web cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is downloaded to a user’s computer when they visit a website and usually contains:

  • the name of the server from which the cookie was sent;
  • the lifetime of the cookie;
  • value – usually a randomly generated unique number.

Cookies are not harmful in themselves and do not contain viruses or other malicious code. However, if it is read by a server in conjunction with a web browser, this can help the website provide a more user-friendly service – for example, by remembering a user’s previous purchases or account details. Only the server that sent the cookie can read and use the cookie. On a trusted website, cookies can thus enrich the experience. However, cookies may also be used in ways that interfere with an individual’s privacy. Cookies can be stored for varying lengths of time, just for the duration of a browsing session or for much longer.
